Drag

The continual reduction of coherent future possibility.

Drag describes a Direction that progressively weakens the conditions required for coherent continuation.

It is not simply failure, decline or loss.

A structure can grow, become wealthier or gain influence while still creating Drag if that growth increases contradiction, dependency, fragility or destroys conditions it relies upon.

Drag is revealed through consequence.

A company may improve short-term performance while eroding trust or resilience. A civilisation may increase technological capability while becoming more vulnerable to the consequences of that capability. An individual may achieve an immediate objective while weakening the structures that support their health, judgement or stability.

Drag can remain hidden for long periods.

A structure may continue functioning while contradiction accumulates beneath the surface. As those pressures compound, fewer coherent futures remain available.

Like Forward, Drag must be read across scale and time.

A decision may solve a local problem while transferring instability elsewhere. A structure can appear successful from one position while reducing possibility across the wider Field.

Drag is not a moral label.

It describes a Direction whose repeated consequences narrow, fragment or destabilise what can coherently continue.

The practical question is simple:

Does this Direction progressively reduce coherent future possibility?

That is Drag.
